Seminary and Coffee

Like I said, I'm working on my Master of Divinity, studying at the Episcopal Divinity School in Cambridge, MA. I'm not Episcopal, but I found the school because of the fantastic work the profs are doing. EDS has working at the forefront of postcolonial theologies, feminist theologies, and anti-racism work for years. When I found such an amazing group of scholars all gathered into one place, I realized that this is where I was called to go.

I got to go up for my first intensive in June, and it was amazing. It's so exciting to go to a school where anti-oppression work is built into the curriculum. The first course that everybody takes is a course on anti-oppression and anti-racism. It's not just about working against personal bias, but working against systemic and ingrained cultural oppression. It's that kind of commitment to justice that makes me excited about school.

My program is a distance program called "distributive learning." Twice a year I go up there for intensives, and in Spring and Fall the classes use video conferencing so I can do school from home and still be "in the classroom." Right now I'm taking liberation theology and church history. The classes are amazing and I'm loving the opportunity to learn from these professors.

I'm also a coffee nerd. I work as a barista in Chapel Hill, and I have a coffee bar in my house. I love fixing coffee for folks and playing around with different beans and brew methods. My favorite brew method right now is the Chemex, but I'm also playing around with an aeropress a friend sent me! ^_^
So those are the two big things that take up most of my time right now. School and work. I plan to post regularly on theology and coffee and life. And I'll make sure I pass along recommendations for good books!

Hi there!

Hi! My name is Andrew and I feel like blogging. I read a bunch and do stuff. I love spending time with friends, and I pitch my hammock in the forest every chance I get. I'm an MDiv student and a barista. I'm a country boy, but I live down in Chapel Hill, NC. I suppose I could write more, but you'll get the rest later. ^_^
